Biology B Overview

08/02/2010 11:23

In Semester B we learn more about DNA.  We learn how the traits that we inherit from our parents are "coded for" in our DNA. We begin by studying simple genetics based on Gregor Mendel's using garden peas experiments.  Then we learn about genetic engineering.  Students will use gel electrophoresis and use a paper model to make a transgenic organism.  We will learn about the similarities and differences between different organisms and how they are grouped, classified and named.  Finally we will learn about systems in living organisms as we prepare for the Maryland HSA.

A variety of teaching strategies are used to promote inquiry, including laboratory experiments, demonstrations, direct instruction, current events, visual presentations, and cooperative learning, as appropriate to the lesson and prior knowledge of the students.
